This was my first visit to the Pick Me Up exhibition which is held annually at Somerset House . . . and I’m not sure what took me so long to discover it! It’s fantastic! This year there were 13 new artists and illustrators featured, but I want to focus on a few prints from Alan Kitching’s ‘A Life In Letterpress’ exhibition.

I knew his work from before but didn’t know of his background or realise what a huge impact he had on graphic design.

I absolutely love this series of street map prints.  His use of colour and layering is delicious, and the textures from the printing are something you just don’t get from digital design these days. It really make some wan to do a screen printing or letterpress workshop to experiment with this method more. I would also love to attempt a similar design collection using just text to create a map of my favourite locations . . . I’ll add that to my to-do list!
